John was in prison at a certain time and then he heard the works of Jesus Christ, he wanted to confirm if Jesus Christ was really the Messiah or not, he sent two of his disciples to go confirm for him and when they did, Jesus was not arrogant or prideful about the question even though He is Messiah. Jesus did something that i liked, He showed them his works. The bible said he told them “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see”. Jesus exercised humility and gentleness, after all He is the Messiah(yhhh). He could have just said, have you not been hearing about me and all the miracles i have been performing, if you need more details pls go ask my disciples…but no, the bible said Jesus responded to them, he even gave them details, He told them that the blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, and the wretched of the earth learn that God is on their side. Hallelujah…. His results and actions could tell.
John the Baptist was a very popular man, the Pharisees, Sadducees and all the cces knew him. So after the disciples of John the Baptist had departed, remember they met him preaching to the multitudes, Jesus started to talk to the crowds about John. He wanted to really know what they thought about him. So He asked them several rhetorical questions about John. The first question Jesus asked them was ”What did you expect when you went out to see John in the wilderness”? He wanted to know what they were expecting to see, because (already the environment John the Baptist was in, is questionable.. lol) What’s someone doing in the wilderness?, Jesus answered them were you expecting to see a reed shaken by the wind? A reed shaken by the wind likely concerns Kings, He wanted to know their thoughts/expectations about John the Baptist.
Jesus persisted with the people on what their thoughts were about John, He said to the people ”did you go to see a prophet?, Jesus answered, Yes, John the Baptist was a prophet, probably the best prophet you will ever hear .He is the prophet Malachi announced, but i say to you this man standing here is more than a prophet. So probably the people had envisaged John as the Messiah, but Jesus came to let them know indeed John is a prophet but Him Jesus is more than just a prophet .
Conclusively, while Jesus was talking to them, He said something in vs 18-19,that really struck me. Jesus said ‘‘For John came neither eating nor drinking and they say, ‘He has a demon’. The son of man came eating and drinking and they say, ‘Look a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’, But wisdom is justified by her children”. Is it not obvious that you cannot please everybody, even Jesus Christ in the flesh could not satisfy the wants of people, how much more you? Look Friends, if you want to do something or maybe God has asked you to do something, please do it, because one thing is certain people will talk. You cannot satisfy the wants of everybody, I learnt something in economics; human needs are insatiable. You don’t need validation/confirmation from everybody before you start or continue(incase you have started and thinking of giving up). I know its the mind of God to reach as many people as possible, but you cant meet or satisfy everybody’s interest while at it, do your part(start in obedience) ,then leave the rest for God! (that’s a popular phrase i guess). Trust me its not that deep, you don’t need that much validation.
